Finally - a great Birds & Bees for boys

After starting with my daughter on "The Care & Keeping of You" (by the American Girl Co.), I really wanted to find a book for my son. He is almost 11, and things are starting to happen. This was the first book that tactfully goes thru all the changes & challenges that face pre-teen and teenage boys. I was very suprised at all the areas that are covered - even more than my husband or I would've thought of talking with him about. If you are going to start with this book with a pre-teen, I would just caution to either wait a little, or read thru the book yourself first. I felt it was more geared toward either a more mature pre-teen boy or the actual teenagers. I purchased the "Bloom" book for my 9-year old daughter at the same time. The American Girl book is just the right stage for her. I will be waiting a while before we start on the "Bloom" book for the same "maturity level" reasons.

You know boys that age are embarrassed to tell
you if they read something like this. So I don't
know. I read some of it and found it to be
very readable, and I feel it would be very
helpful to a young teen boy.

Good Background, Easily Read and Digested

The author contend that six megatrends drive China today. The first is its need to urbanize a billion people - 300 million moving to cities now, and 350 million more to follow. China has 160 cities with populations exceeding one million and 14 with over five million. Increasingly these cities are becoming linked to create urban areas with 30+ million, the size of many European nations. Soon there will be one billion urban dwellers in China, creating enormous demands for infrastructure and resources such as clean water. Yet, 40% of China's rivers are seriously polluted - thus, China plans to invest $636 billion in water-related projects through 2020. Meanwhile, real estate investment hit $980 billion in 2011, up from $120 billion in 2003. China's leading developer, built 80,000 apartments in over 25 cities in 2012 alone, with sales of about $16 billion.

The second is huge manufacturing scale - it has increased enormously over the past 30 years and is worth $2.2 trillion/year now in value-added terms. It makes 80% of the world's air-conditioners, 90% of PCs, about 70% of the world's solar panels, 90% of our mobile phones, and 65% of our shoes. Manufacturing comprises 40% of China's economy and employs 130 million directly. The most global Chinese company is Huawei, which began by developing lower-priced equipment for second- and third-tier cities in China, avoiding competition from major global manufacturers. It then expanded abroad into less-developed areas in Southeast Asia, Africa, and Eastern Europe. By 2012 it was the world's top telecommunications-equipment company, earning two-thirds of its $36 billion outside China.

Third - rising Chinese consumers. Some 300 million Chinese have entered the middle class already, and another 200 million are expected to do so by 2026. The Asia-Pacific region will account for two-thirds of the world's middle class by 2030. Tyson Foods' China operations can process over 3 million chickens/week; Chinese chicken consumption is expected to increase 18%/year for the next five years. In 2013, a Chinese firm spent $7.1 billion to buy America's Smithfield, the world's largest pork producer and processor.

The fourth - lots of money, over $15 trillion in bank deposits and growing by $2 trillion/year. Foreign-exchange reserves total $3.5 trillion, and its yearly trade surplus with the U.S. has grown from $10 million in 1985 to over $300 billion in 2012.

Number five - China is becoming a brainpower behemoth, thanks to doubling spending on education and increasing the number of college graduates 7X since 1998 - 1 million in 1998, 7.5 million in 2012. China accounted for 2.2% of world R&D spending in 2012, 12.8% in 2009, and is now second to the U.S. Huawei has a 150,000 person work-force, with 68,000 in R&D; Cisco has 66,000, with 21,000 in R&D. The bad news is that 25% of 2012 college graduates failed to land a job by the end of the year.

Last - China has more Internet users than any other country (550 million), and that number is expected to explode.

China is the second largest economy in the world, after the United States, and rapidly will become number one, with new opportunities for some Americans.

In their recent best-selling and wryly titled book, designed to introduce American businessman to modern China, two Peking University Professors explain China Business in 6 short stories, Professors Jonathan Woetzel and Jeffrey Towson highlight and explain six trends in China:

1. URBANIZATION: “China is currently witnessing the largest migration in human history. Hundreds of millions of people are flooding from the countryside into the cities.” 300 million have done so already and another 350 million are likely to follow. “There will soon be 1 billion Chinese city dwellers,” in lots of new cities, generating and spending great wealth.

2. HUGE MANUFACTURING SCALE: The cost of producing a unit of production usually decreases with the total number of units produced, due to the learning curve, and with the rate at which they are produced, due to efficiencies of scale. This leads Chinese companies to invest heavily in production equipment and personnel, hoping to drive out their competitors with lower prices allowed by their lower costs.

3. RISING CHINESE CONSUMERS: “Chinese (and Asian) middle class consumers are the future,” far more important than Europe, Brazil, Russia, or even India, and eventually eclipsing North America.

4. MONEY---AND LOTS OF IT: “China has over $15 trillion in bank deposits and these grow by over $2 trillion every year.” A trillion here and a trillion there, and you are beginning to talk about big money.

5. THE BRAINPOWER BEHEMOTH: “…the number of college graduates has gone from approximately 1 million in 1998 to 7.5 million in 2012.” There graduates, especially those trained at the best schools in China and the U.S., form a highly valuable resource in the global competition for markets.

6. THE CHINESE INTERNET: Professors Woetzel and Towson note that the Chinese Internet, a much more recent innovation in China than in America, now has a half-billion participants already, twice number of Americans, and Chinese is the predominant language of the Internet world-wide. “In the 60 largest Chinese cities, people spend around 70 percent of their spare time online.” Amazing!

The book offers exactly what both authors promise: It decodes the six mega trends that currently drive and will continue to drive China's future. Easy to read. Easy to remember.

Each chapter is condensed into a handful of key points/statements which help the reader to understand and remember the underlying mega trend. Additionally, the utilisation of real entrepreneurial success stories gives immediate understanding how people rode the respective mega trend while also offering casual "edutainment" and a rare "look behind the curtain".

China buffs/insiders will eventually want to read more about each of the mega trends. If the book would claim to be exhaustive, this would be a acceptable criticism, but this is - as stated - not the objective of the book.

Having studied, worked, lived several years in China now, I still very much appreciated this clear and concise 60-90min read to sharpen my understanding about the six mega trends.

Excellent book

Mr Lomas' book on Nikola Tesla is an excellent book. It details a little about Tesla's childhood, his mental problems and the relationships he had (or didn't have, if you want to look at it that way). If you are new to learning about Nikola Tesla, I would recommend this book. It explains in simple terms Tesla's most important contributions to civilisation and technology: the AC electricity system we use today and radio. The books dwells a little on Tesla, Westinghouse and Edison, as one reviewer mentions.

This book will not satisfy the scientific reader. For those of you interested in further details of Tesla's engineering and scientific work, buy one of the many excellent CD compilations of his works, patents, articles, letters, etc. I have the Nu Energy Horizons CD on Tesla which is magnificent. Also grab Tesla: Man out of Time by Margaret Cheney and Wizard: The Life and Times of Nikola Tesla: Biography of a Genius by Marc J. Seifer.

This book's purpose is some entertaining bed-time reading (or that's my impression). First time Tesla readers will love this book, as well as those who want a biography of Tesla that's written well and isn't too technical.

Too simple for my liking

Nicola Tesla, the subject of the book, was one of the true geniuses of all time. His tale is of amazing innovation, with poor commercialisation. He made electricity travel for many miles when Edison could only transmit a few hundred meters. His radios could transmit anywhere in the world when Marconi could only transmit a few hundred meters. He completely designed the AC electrical system, which without the world would not be the same. Tesla is an excellent case of lack of business sense.
Lomas carries a grudge against the likes of Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse, which is probably warranted in telling the story from Tesla's point of view. Much of the story is dedicated to describing the relationships between Tesla, Edison and Westinghouse.
This book isn't a great work. Lomas has thoroughly researched his book, although he has not referenced anything, although he does admit this. Some descriptions of engineering concepts could be a lot better. It is also relatively short. I found myself wanting more information. This book won't please the intellectual reader, who would be better off looking for a lengthier book. I enjoyed reading this book merely for the story of Tesla.
While I didn't enjoy this book that much it would be a very good read for children and teens, especially those with an interest in science. In general I recommend reading about Tesla, who is an amazing albeit forgotten character, and was responsible for the 20th century.

brilliant

I've read quite probably every Tesla biography out there. Most idealize Tesla, and most characterize him as super human. Lomas makes you understand Tesla's humanity and lack of business sense. Although the classic Tesla biographies such as Margret Chaney's Man Out Of Time and Mark Seifer's Wizard are more in depth, I find Lomas' work simply brilliant. Highly recommended.

A data analyst's review

I'm a data analyst for a few companies and organizations. I'm also in school to become a data scientist (very similar, but "scientist" gets paid more than "analyst" :-D ), so I've been gobbling up as many books on big data and data crunching as I possible can. Quite a few of the books out there are disappointments, clearly trying to ride aboard the "big data" buzz word that is currently popular. But this book was different.

It's an exceptionally good introduction to big data. Don't expect to see a whole lot of deep, technical detail in this book. They're not there. But if you just want to grasp the concept of big data, this would be the book I'd recommend you purchase. Usually books are overpriced or priced just right. In the case of "Big Data Demystified" the book is actually worth way more than the $2.99 I paid to read it on my Kindle.

A great read for Big Data novices

If you are new to Big Data but want it to be explained to you in a simple yet highly engaging way, this is the book to read. I really like how David uses tons of real case studies/companies as examples. It was pretty neat to read about what info people typically lie about on OkCupid, or what considerations Match.com take into account when recommending matches. And how Facebook is at its core, a big data company. These examples help establish a good foundation around what Big Data is, why we should care, how companies use it (ex: see that button on Amazon? Think it is there randomly? Think again!). David also talks about new frontiers in Big Data that when figured out, will be GAME CHANGING. Very cool to know and keep an eye out for.

The book is a simple read -- great for airplane rides or a free Sunday afternoon. I wanted to finish reading this right before the Big Data Conference this week in SF, so I'd have some working knowledge of what people are talking about when they say "Hadoop." If you are having a hard time choosing an intro book on Big Data, I would highly recommend this book. Very well written, simple to understand, and it is filled with relevant examples, making it very interesting to read.

Well versed in technology, entrepreneur and writer Dave Feinleib weaves together a cogent explanation of Big Data technology with entertaining examples of how we use it in everyday life. In his balanced approach, Dave is careful to explain both the state of the art of Big Data technologies and their current limits. He writes clearly and succinctly about: the technology, entertaining use cases, successful business models and the human impact of Big Data. This well woven combination makes the book accessible and fun to read.

Practical, Situational, Inexpensive

This book is (a) practical - it provides logical, step-by-step details that work, (b) situational - it is organized by the many types of conversations and interactions that one is likely to have on the job, and (c) inexpensive - it offers a lot for the money.
Granted, some of the specific situations covered in this book occur regularly and will be most helpful to readers who may have little or no workplace experience.
The book's real value, however, involves those interactions we have with our bosses, employees, customers, and suppliers that do not happen all that often. When these situations come up, emotions may run high and the stakes may be significant. In my experience, "common sense" alone wasn't always enough to ensure that I got what I needed and still maintained a good relationship with the other person. This book doesn't guarantee that (nothing does), but it does offer guidelines that have helped and worked for me.
If you have natural political savvy on the job, you probably don't need the information in this book. If you are more comfortable dealing with tasks than dealing with the people in your workplace, I think you will find this book well worth twelve bucks and the few minutes it takes to read about a specific interaction before you're actually having it.

Excellent and essential book for everyone

I started teaching people to make PowerPoint presentations around 1992. Around 1995, I realized that many people were talking about themselves, so I suggested that the most important word they could use was "You." In 2003, I realized that people who wanted to be accepted by their audience should use the word "We." And then I picked up this book and read that the the three most important words in a business person's vocabulary were "we," "us," and "our." And that was on page eleven. At that point I was sold.

It's very easy to open your mouth and say your message in a way that alienates people. Very few people can negotiate difficult communications, but this book will help them do this. The book shows you words, phrases and body language to use and to avoid. It has numerous samples of conversations you can have with your fellow workers to put yourself in the best position.

The book covers all kinds of spoken business communications - the four largest sections include Getting a Job, speaking with your Supervisors, your Colleagues, and your Subordinates. Other groups are Prospective Clients, Current Clients, Handling Credit, Collection, and Customer Complaints, Vendors and Suppliers, and Lenders and Investors. In many cases you'll see the traps you can fall into.

You need to use this book with a little thought, in that the circumstances are usually similar to what you have to deal with, but not identical. But a few minutes' reading will change you from being a tongue-tied person to someone who achieves what you want.

I feel sorry for people who dismiss this and other similar books as "just common sense." I've known few people who possessed even a fraction of the skills shown in this book, and my own experience shows that I spent over ten years learning the information that appears in the beginning of the book.

Definitely a must-have, and a good book to build your general communications skills. And you'll stop coming away from meetings thinking, "I wish I could have said that better."

In this book Jack Griffin provides helpful advice on how to evaluate and improve your communication skills. The book is filled with self-tests so you can evaluate how well you handle various communication skills. From there he provides an in-depth analysis of the most critical components of those skills followed by positive methods to improve your skills.
All of the most common communication needs in a work situation are covered whether it is dealing with a supervisor, subordinate, customer, potential customer, creditors, customer complaints, vendors, investors or job interviews.
One of the unique things about the book are the lists of words and phrases to use as well as ones to avoid and why. A recommended read for anyone seeking to improve their communication in all aspects of the work environment.

Excellent, gripping story

This is Enid Blyton at her best. I read this book in grade 5, almost 30 years ago, and I still remembered the title to search for it for my own kids. This was a book I just couldn't put down. A recent visit to the rugged coast of southwest England brought the memories of this book flooding back. Even though I'd never seen such coastline at the age of 10, I could imagine it well from her vivid descriptions.

Just the title takes me back to my wonder years

I read this book when I think I was in grade 6 or 7th back in 1985 or so . Infact this was my first novel and after that I read it at least 4-5 times.As I read this book I felt as everything is happening in front of me just a right mix of suspence/drama for the kids brain. but I am sure even today I can read it in 2 days. I would definitely get this for my daughter in next couple of years.
