Jean-Luc is a Member of the Acad�mie fran�aise, Emeritus Professor of Philosophy at the Universit� Paris-Sorbonne (Paris IV). He is the Andrew Thomas Greeley and Grace McNichols Greeley Professor of Catholic Studies, Professor of the Philosophy of Religions and Theology, and Professor in the Committee on Social Thought and the Department of Philosophy at the University of Chicago. He also holds the Dominique Dubarle chair at the Institut Catholique of Paris.

Stephen E. Lewis is Professor and Chair of the English Department at the Franciscan University of Steubenville.

A weak attempt to explain flow

I bought this book after having spent a couple of years learning lean at a company that does it pretty well. I didn't feel as if true flow was being implemented, and was hoping to find some knowledge that only highly experienced consultants could give from years spent at multiple sites. This book disppointed me greatly in my expectations. The way the authors deal with flow is on the surface at best. They talk of taking timings, but don't give details on how to do it well (like leave the stopwatch running so as not to lose observations). They fail to discuss movements of the operator that add to lack of flow. Instead they focus on "cells" that are created where there are piles of WIP between stations. Well, no kidding, they didn't get flow implemented. The book leaves you with the feeling of not having really gotten the whole story, and wondering if this was just a Lean Enterprise attempt at getting you to buy the next book they can come up with meant to answer all unanswered questions.
Stick to Learning to See as far as I'm concerned and move on to other authors.

Top 10 Lean Books

After reading approximately 30 "Lean" books, I reached a point where I was finding only a few new ideas from each book -- and I felt I knew as much or more than the author on some covered topics as well. But every once in a while, I read something that pushes me down to a "student" level, opening my eyes wider than before, and realizing how much of a lean journey lies ahead of me... that is what "Creating Continuous Flow" did to me. This book confirmed my understanding of key concepts such as takt time, total work content, and line balancing; but it also filled me with new knowledge on topics such as work distribution (e.g. "splitting the work" versus "the circuit") and building to pitch. And I use the guidelines for cell layout, machines, and materials management with each and every kaizen event. Although the book lacks an index and glossary that would help referencing the material (and it's Table of Contents is not detailed enough to be useful), the authors (Mike Rother and Rick Harris) do a fantastic job in simplifying the tactics of implementation while packing the short book (about 100 pages) with useful lean information. This is one of my top 10 Lean books, and I give the "red book" 5 stars -- highly recommended!

A Great Book!

This book is even better than Learning to See. There is much more detail about how to implement in-cell improvements. You are not doing LEAN until you start doing what this book teaches. I was able to start applying the principles immediately. This book shows you a practical, detailed, direct approach that is easier to understand and apply than the more theoretical LEAN Thinking and Machine that Changed the World.

Buyer Beware

When I first purchased this book I thought it would be an instructional guide on how to program generic robots, but when I got it all the chapthers relate to a specific robot (iRobot, Lego NXT, etc). This made it frustrating to me because the author expects you to have this robot if you want to follow along with the guide. In my opinion, all the chapthers should be step up to run in the simulation with text on how to transfer your code to the robot if you have one. Also the authors style of writing is poor for an instructional guide. Critical steps should be bolded in the text to signify that this is a critical step. There was often times where I would get unexpected results doing the guide because a critical step was buried in a large paragraph. This book is not for somebody that doesn't have a background in C# (which I do) or at least a similar programming language. Granted teaching generic programming would be beyond the scope of this book, but if you don't have any programming background this book is not for you.

Glad to finally have a book for MSRS

This book is a good start but I can't wait for the next edition (if there is one). The author attempted too much coverage for the limited number of pages (a little over 200). I have completed all of the Microsoft Tutorials for MSRS and this book is a refreshing change. The author begins with coverage of SERVICES and does not include any illustrations. Microsoft Tutorials and Powerpoint presentations have several great illustrations on SERVICES. Also, the coverage of SERVICES is completed in an orderly manner but not in the same order used in the coding chapters (chapters 5 and later). There are the expected typos, as you expect in a new book. A couple can cause frustration until you figure out what happened.

I will say that MSRS books are very much needed. While MSRS is not a huge software product, it contains several new concepts for many programmers. I have a background in C, C++, C#, and VB. MSRS is best when using C#.

In summary:
1. I would have liked to have had a thicker book (like the one coming out in June from other authors.
2. The author of this book made the decision to only do superficial coverage of MSRS subjects such as Simulation and VPL which I believe will be used quite a bit in academic enviorments and more everywhere in the future. The VPL feature of C# code generation is important and deserved move attention.
3. The author's style of writing is great and very readable. I wish her well and look forward to a 2nd edition.

Not for beginners

I applaude the effort, but this book is written for people with programming and robotics experience. There is much effort in explaining what but not how. At times I felt I was reading the MS verbage.

The greatest benefit of MSRS is the Simulation feature. You can get your feet wet in Robotics for free. That should have been the focus for the book. Everything should have been reference from there.

I knew I was in trouble when the first chapter didn't make a robot move and spent most of the time on concepts.

I was hoping for step by step tour of MSRS, but I think the value in this book is after you out of the novice stage of MSRS.

clearly written book

This is a clearly written book that presents Taguchi's ideas on quality control. Explained nicely is the loss function of Taguchi that has become so popular. Also, discussed in detail are models for online quality control, tolerancing, and preventive maintenance. (This book is not about Taguchi's celebrated work on design of experiments.) Although some theory appears to be heuristically derived, what needs to be pointed out here is that some of these methods have been used in Toyota! So there is a clear value to reading about them. One would think this would be mandatory reading for a graduate course on quality control, but instead the book has gone out of print! When I was a graduate student, I was really lucky to have a professor who used this book as a text book.

because there are so many wonderful suggestions listed in this book

Let me start off with this - If you read this book and come away with nothing substantial, you have to be adamantly against the idea of accepting any help whatsoever, because there are so many wonderful suggestions listed in this book, about how to strengthen the most important types of connections you can have with your spouse. And while my husband and I are definitely new to marriage, I found myself agreeing with a lot of Marcus & Ashley's advice, relating to our own experiences of having the past 8 years of living together under our belt as well. I feel like the two of them have been through it all and come out even stronger for it, which is evident through their writing.

What really resonated with me was the concept, introduced in Chapter 6 (Physical & Sexual Intimacy), of never giving up on the notion of pursuing your spouse. It's so true, because once that happens, the excitement and passion in a relationship starts to drift away. At least that's been my experience, and I love that this book reminded me of that simple concept.

Also, I really like the way in which the book is written: with simplicity & efficient reasoning. Plus, they provide plenty of inspiration to strengthen various aspects of connections & intimacy within your marriage, with lots of specific examples and realistic suggestions. I would definitely recommend this book to couples who are struggling with their marriage, and who are willing to put in the effort to resolve the possible problems they may discover.

I enjoyed this book very much. It's helpful for any couple who wants to strengthen their marital bond. I really liked the style it was written in. It has the explanation of the concepts, real-life examples from the authors (who are totally relatable!), and then instructions on how to implement it in your marriage. It's nothing crazy that makes you feel like it's impossible to do. It's small things that everyone can apply to their marriage to make it stronger.

This book brought up a lot of good points. It mentions "resentment" quite often. It's so right. It is a major factor that has to be addressed. I recommend this book to all couples!

About the Author
A. F. J. Levi is Professor of Electrical Engineering and of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Southern California. He joined USC after working for 10 years at AT&T Bell Labs, New Jersey. Professor Levi is the author of the book Applied Quantum Mechanics, Second Edition (Cambridge University Press, 2006).

A window to the world of quantum mechanics for the engineer... but not completely self-contained

There is no shortage of quantum mechanics text to choose from. And if I had solely relied on the majority recommendations for an introductory text, I would have certainly missed this gem.

The author is very successful presenting the recondite fundamentals of quantum mechanics in a manner accessible to material scientists and engineers. This is accomplished without losing the rigor necessary to build a strong foundation. Applications of concepts are dispersed through out the chapters and keep the reader's attention.

But by the far the best selling point of this book are the worked problems at the end of the chapters. It is my personal opinion that if a textbook fails to at least provide final answers and solution hints to presented exercises, it is not really a textbook, but a reference reserved for those who have been adequately exposed to the material before. Here all end of the chapter questions are accompanied with worked solutions. This is a rarity among all undergrad or graduate science or engineering texts. This alone makes it valuable for self-study.

To those completely uninitiated to quantum mechanics, I do not recommend this book as a sole source because it is not sufficiently self-contained. It would be best to complement it with "Introduction to Applied Quantum and Statistical Mechanics" by Hagelstein. I have yet to read "Applied Quantum Mechanics" by Kroemer, which has recieved much praise and appears to be another excellent introductory source.

stresses important practical cases

Levi's book differs from standard QM texts, in furnishing more of an applied bent. Directed towards those students in applied physics, materials science and engineering. For example, there is a superb chapter on electron propagation in crystals. Where we see how to describe propagation by transmission matrices. And how energy bands arise due to the periodicity of the potential seen by electrons. Of course, solid state texts also discuss this. But the treatment here of such ideas as tunnelling, and using the WKB approximation to describe that tunnelling in a semiquantitative manner, is clear and detailed. Plus, the examples focus on important heterostructures, where band gap engineering is important.

For semiconductor lasers, there is a similar treatment. With comparisons amongst the common types of laser diodes, like GaAs and InGaAsP.

The numerous problems and the copiously worked out examples are also a nice feature of the text.
