Some beautiful examples of the genre, but it is by no means an exhaustive survey.

More 3.5 than 4 stars

As with most of Dover's book this is a great source book for Art Nouveau designs. The selections are drawn from Art Nouveau periodicals, posters, textile and wallpaper designs, bookplates, jewellery and stained glass. Many of the designs are taken from previously published Dover source books, so it acts as a best of/basic introduction.

However Art Nouveau officiando's take note. It only covers examples from France, Germany, Austria, Czechoslavakia (exclusively Mucha), England, Switzerland and the US, with the first 3 countries offering the largest examples. It has a biographical index to the artists, but this contains very cursory biographical detail. I would also question the assertion that it contains "images by virtually every key artist of the Art Nouveau movement". There are no examples by Klimt, Mackintosh. Tiffany, Lalique or Gaudi so there are major ommissions.

As a source book, it offers some beautiful examples of the genre, but it is by no means an exhaustive survey.

More Primer then Essential but still worthy.

I was prepared to be disappointed with this book from the outset, thinking that much like many recent titles in the last few years it would be a rehash once again of the same old French Nouveau Ad Posters, and Mucha's common works like "Princezna Hyacinta", "Seasons'', or ''Medee'' Theater Ad.

However I was more then pleasantly surprised. The book itself is broken up into various European regions responsible for the many flavors of art nouveau the we know today.And within each division are many lesser known works and stand alone motifs that made this very savory reading for me personal. As a designer it is a joy to see the major elements broken down into their essential parts, offering a pretty good insight into how they made up the bigger picture and influenced everything from jewelry, architecture and fashion cementing it as byword for elegance.

I cant recommend this book enough for people wanting to get a good base understanding of the art form, but I would hesitate to call it an essential reference. As its been mentioned before its more a primer then a deep delving of the many stunning works out and abroad. But that in and of itself does not detract from the many eye catching forms contained within.
Definitely a good suggesting for those of the Art or Textile persuasions..

For those who know me, Art Nouveau is my period. I am particularly well read in it, and have had several hundred desktop pieces glorifying my abodes. Dover has published countless little books on and with elements of Art Nouveau design, from cloth to wallpaper to glass and everything in between. They have been enormously useful to artists and designers looking for inspiration or outright theft, and anything to leverage the most pleasant ambience provided by Art Nouveau is welcome.

This new offering from Dover is a little different, because it takes graphic designs from other Dover books on Art Nouveau. It’s sort of a meta collection. The book is sectioned by country, so you can see how (very) different each one’s Art Nouveau was. Typically, some major artist set the tone and style, and derivations bloomed. Mackintosh in Scotland, Beardsley in England, Moser in Austria, Hoffmann in Germany, …. The whole period lasted from the mid 1890s to the early 1920s, and was subsumed by Art Deco, whose seeds are clearly evident, particularly in Austrian and German Art Nouveau (Jugendstil).

The Corpse washer... The Pomegranate Alone... It is what it is! We all are Jodi!

The Corpse washer, this novel of Sinan Antoon that it is translated from its Arabic version titled “The Pomegranate Alone” by him too to English, and as I read it couple of times and now having it in English, the same feelings that struck my high walls of isolation and demolished them to appear naked as the reality is naked, bitter and painful!
Reading and absorbing the main character in this novel “Jawad or Jodi" let me think, and to believing this story is not fiction, I felt him, lived his questions, transformed myself to this character, and after I finished the reading, I was naked again, felt of huge emptiness, indeed I just want to go back between the words to find myself, yes it is sorrow, fear, and pain but whenever I read any chapter, I feel I am standing next to Jodi, as his close friend that he will never die and will never leave him alone!
This novel, the corpse washer is a must to read, if you want to see Iraq and get the picture from another corner, this novel will help you, and it is highly recommended!

love from the first page!!

Although I am no longer a novel reader as I used to be when I was younger but this book was an exception! I bought it when I heard the author in an interview on NPR and I was impressed by the dialogue and felt compelled to order the book and read it. I am an iraqi teacher who left Iraq right after the first Gulf war just like the author and I lived and witnessed most of the events in the story!! However, you don't need to be Iraqi to appreciate the novel because it is a master piece beyond description. I was quite taken by the book for days and weeks!
I highly recommend it.

A waste of time.

This book may have been interesting when published in 1995, but it's woefully inadequate for today's home soapmakers. Not good for beginners due to the weak and incomplete instructions given. Vital safety and troubleshooting issues were totally ignored. One of the recipes is downright insane. "Mechanics' Body Repair Soap" calls for 2oz. of highly flammable kerosene, a degreasing agent and "scent that only a mechanic would love". No hazardous materials warning. She regards it as an ordinary fragrance oil. I wouldn't want to overturn a potful of scalding hot, caustic lye doing that one. The author owns a well-staffed soap manufacturing plant and is totally out of touch with what she calls "common, everyday folk". She offers only one boring recipe using 38 ounces of Crisco, 48 ounces of inexpensive carrier oils, 12oz. of lye and 32oz. of water, including unsoftened bilge from the tap. A small fortune in strong herbal essential oils is added to that. Result: Loads of waxy-looking soap blocks in harsh, dull colors. OK for outdoorsy men, but no aesthetic appeal for the average woman. Nothing on moisturizing additives, attractive coloration, light fragrances or anything else women tend to look for in toiletries. She relegates ever-popular Lavender scents to "elderly women" and writes in a generally condescending tone. The proofreaders had a few spelling problems as well. There are much better instruction books available. Among them, "The Hand Made Soap Book" by Melinda Coss. Published in September 1998. A beautiful book with lots of great ideas.

Sandy Maine presents the whole package in her luscious soapmaking books, thus I credit her as an important inspiration for my career in bodycare. Maine goes deeper than merely presenting recipes, her books contain gorgeous photographs that are truelly inspirational as well as touching personal narratives.

Minus a Star for Grammar Error on Cover

This book is interesting, but it's nothing spectacular. I have read better written, more interesting books on the subject (and they were written from an academic perspective as well). I would give the book 4 stars, but there is a grammatical error on the cover -- yes, on the cover! The title is "Deconstructing Organized Crime: An Historical and Theoretical Study." "An" is incorrect. It should be "A." This is a little, nitpicky thing, but when both authors are professors, I expect someone to catch this.

Helen Joseph-Armstrong is a Professor of Fashion Design at the Fashion Center of the Los Angeles Trade-Technical College, USA. A teacher, designer, consultant, and author, Armstrong is a recipient of the Nisod Excellence Award from the University of Texas at Austin and a Life Time Achievement Award from the Association of Sewing and Design Professionals.

You need it.

Great book. I have the Amaden-Crawford already and think it is a very good draping book. This one is , in my opinion, even better (not that the CAC one is bad).

First : The book begins with all the basics. Tools, fabric weaving, grain, marking style line, a quick reminder about facings and buttoned extensions etc...

Then : How to prepare the figure, with tape over the bust, lines, how to analyse and see the figure if working on a person instead of a dressform. Basic measurements that helps as guides

And finally comes the draping process. For the basic set (basic bodice, skirt and sleeve) They are both quite identical in result. The technic differs a little though. I tend to prefer the way HJA pins ease "fold" while draping : one of my major issue in draping is ease ('cause I've draped for several years by myself molding gowns and bustiers before getting into draping eased garment as dress and tailored jackets...)
But for the 2 darts bodice I really like the way CAC adds a grainline in the center of her princess panel. This really helped me.

I really like that she proposes 2 attachable arms the relaxed (for classic sleeves) and the straight arm (for raglans and kimonos).

The people owning her book on patternmaking will encounter some already known styles (I don't know if it's the same for CAC, I only have her draping book). And as on the drafting book you'll find a really consequent amount of styles to drape.

Buyer beware

I've had this book for about a month and it is already falling apart. For the price I paid for this book, this shouldn't be happening. I've asked other classmates and they've all said the same thing. My rating reflects that of my disappointment. As for the book itself, it's okay but I wouldn't say it's the greatest book for beginners. I agree with a past reviewer that said this book is best used with an instructor.

Excellent book

This book is great for those with intermediary / advanced sewing skills who have a lot of creativity but still need a few pointers to make their sketches come true. It's an education. If you are a beginner and are serious about learning, it's a good investment too, just keep in mind the book assumes you already knows the basics and won't be holding your hand step-by-step.
