About the Author
Mitchel S. Berger M.D., F.A.C.S., F.A.A.N.S. is the Berthold and Belle N. Guggenhime Professor and Chairman of the Department of Neurological Surgery at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), and is an expert in the fields of neurosurgery and neuro-oncology. He also serves as Director of UCSF’s Brain Tumor Research Center.

After graduating from Harvard University in 1974, Dr. Berger earned his medical degree from the University of Miami School of Medicine. He completed a clinical fellowship in neuro-oncology at UCSF, a fellowship in pediatric neurosurgery at the Hospital for Sick Children of the University of Toronto, and his neurosurgical residency at UCSF. In 1986, he became Assistant Professor of Neurosurgery at the University of Washington School of Medicine, after which he was named Associate Professor (1990) and Professor (1996).

Dr. Berger has clinical expertise in treating adult and pediatric brain and spinal cord tumors. He is a pioneer of intraoperative brain mapping - a technique used to avoid functional areas of the brain during surgical resection of a tumor. His work has enabled surgeons to perform more extensive resection of tumor with less chance of producing sensorimotor or language deficit.

Dr. Berger is a leader of translational research and is the Principal Investigator of the UCSF Brain Tumor Research Center’s Specialized Program of Research Excellence in neuro-oncology, funded by the National Cancer Institute. His specific research interests lie in identifying molecular markers related to the progression and prognosis of glial tumors, as well as the development of small-molecule therapeutic agents that can be administered directly to the brain via convection-enhanced drug delivery.

During his distinguished career, Dr. Berger has served as President of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons, President of the Society of Neuro-Oncology, President of the North Pacific Society of Neurology, and Vice President of the Congress of Neurological Surgeons. He has also been a director of the American Board of Neurological Surgery and a member of the Board of Directors of the American Association of Neurological Surgeons. He is currently President of the American Academy of Neurological Surgery.

In 2009, Dr. Berger was awarded the prestigious Winn Prize by the Society for Neurological Surgery. He currently serves as a member of the National Football League Head, Neck and Spine Committee, focusing on retired players’ issues and examining the consequences of repetitive head injury and concussion. He is also an active member of numerous professional organizations, including the American Organization for Cancer Research, the American College of Surgeons, and the World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies.

A prolific author, Dr. Berger has contributed over 500 scientific articles to peer-reviewed journals, has edited 6 textbooks, and has written over 80 chapters on various neurosurgical topics. He is currently on the editorial boards of several leading journals including Neuro-Oncology and Neurosurgery.

I am glad you have come across this book. If you are suffering or struggling in your life right now, I understand. I spent many years stuck in a place of debilitating shyness that prevented me from speaking up, meeting people, going on dates, and having satisfying relationships. I know the pain of this shyness in a very deep and intimate way.

The worst part about this shyness was not that I couldn't go after what I wanted in my life. It wasn't that I felt nervous and tense in my body much of the time. It wasn't even that I was unable to bring myself to ask women out or date because of my intense fear of rejection. All of these aspects of my shyness were very painful and I struggled with each of them, but the worst part about it was that I believed I was going to be stuck like this forever.

I saw other guys, including friends of mine, who were somehow able to do what I could not. They would make jokes, speak up in groups, and flirt with women. I saw myself as somehow different, or less than they were. This gap between them and me seemed like an insurmountable chasm, leaving me on the outskirts forever.

A woman's perspective on this book

A couple of points, this book is directed towards a male audience more than a female audience. There are lots of mentions of 'talking to cute girls', etc., but there are great pieces of information so ignore references to cute girls and keep reading. The text is accessible and easy to follow and the concepts are fairly straight forward.

I have been looking for information that would help me work through my social anxiety for some time. I liked to think that I was well adjusted until it came to doing a presentation or having to be the center of attention in which case my body would go into a fight or flight response. Prior to reading this book, I was able to get through those difficult moments, but I really didn't want to fear having those difficult moments anymore. Reading this book gave me clues as to how social anxiety has impacted many areas of my life. This book has provided a great framework for moving past my social anxiety and I highly recommend it. As a side note, the links provided are no longer valid so I wasn't able to pull up the sites that were discussed.

Also, if you see me alone at the movies, make sure you smile.

Very practical and specific advice that you can put to immediate use

I have read this book, and I have also been working directly with Aziz for several months. I recommend both experiences very strongly (although working with him directly is pretty expensive, so if you are tight on money, work with the book).

I'm a middle-aged guy who has struggled with social anxiety my whole life. I sought out Aziz because I got a job offer that I knew was going to take me way outside my comfort zone, on a regular basis, and force me to take a lot of social initiative.

I have tried talk therapy in the past, but found that I was just recounting and dwelling on my difficulties and failures. If anything, it made me feel worse.

After several months of working with Aziz (personally and with the book), I am now making real progress, which I can see in successful efforts to connect with people.

It's easy to explain where you need to go; getting there is of course the trick. Here's your problem, and mine: You think you are defective because you have a long history of bungled efforts to connect with people. Deep down, you think something is wrong with you. You go into your interactions with people with that mindset. And that's why you fail so often, which then reinforces your conclusions about yourself.

You need to stop that. You have to understand that an ability to connect with people is just a skill, like any other. You weren't born with a natural gift for it, as some people are--otherwise you wouldn't be reading this. But that doesn't mean you can't develop the skill. You can. And once you come to feel that you just have an underdeveloped skill that you need to work on--rather than some deep personal flaw--you can start creating new patterns in your life.

Aziz has devoted his professional career to finding practical ways to break down the self-destructive mindset holding you back, and to developing practical, specific exercises you can do to create a new pattern of success. He's done his homework, and he ties his advice to strategies that have been proven to work through psychological studies.

But sometimes, he can get you just to laugh at yourself, at the sheer ridiculousness of the toxic way you judge yourself and hold yourself back. That can be the most helpful of all.

Imagine a high school coach who stood on the sidelines during the big game screaming at his players: "You suck! You don't even belong on the field! You're going to lose, big time! Everyone is going to find out you're a complete fraud as a football team!"

That's what you're doing to yourself. You need to cut it out. This book will help you create a self-reinforcing pattern of success, rather than a pattern of failure.

This is the solution you have been looking for

I couldn't tell you how much time I have wasted over the years watching hours of videos and reading countless books and articles desperately searching for a solution to social anxiety. This book IS the solution and I just wish I had found it sooner...

As well as being an outstanding read and equipping you with everything you need to know to change your life for the better, Dr Gazipura can draw on his own experiences and really relate to you on a deep and personal level.

The first part of the book deals with understanding social anxiety and it identifies the root causes of your negative thought patterns which ultimately fuel your low self-esteem. He expertly exposes these negative beliefs for what they really are - ridiculous assumptions based on false evidence! Through performing a list of simple but effective exercises, you learn to shift these negative beliefs and start seeing yourself in a much more positive light.

After making that mental shift and realizing that it's absolutely possible to overcome social anxiety, Dr Gazipura guides you on to the second part of the book - taking bold action. He equips you with the practical knowledge and sheer motivation to begin to challenge yourself and expose yourself to your social fears. With your new positive mind-set and an end in sight, this process is encouraging and actually rather enjoyable. I have made huge progress over the last couple of weeks and I am becoming increasingly motivated to challenge myself more and more every day.

To sum up, the guy's a legend! I urge you all to pick a copy up right now, you won't regret it!

Dr. Howard Bandy has both the formal education and practical experience required to write this book. He has degrees in mathematics, physics, engineering, and computer science. He was a professor of computer science and mathematics, vice-president and designer of a commercially successful stock selection and timing program, and senior research analyst for a Commodity Trading Advisor where he held a Series 3 license.

“Mean Reversion Trading Systems” (2013) is yet another major contribution to the theory, understanding and practice of Quantitative Technical Analysis by Dr Howard Bandy. This follows his superb earlier books “Quantitative Trading Systems” (2008) and “”Modelling Trading System Performance” (2011).

In this latest book Dr Bandy has built on and extended the thinking of his previous books. Howard has both a deep and broad statistical, mathematical and computational understanding of both financial markets, quantitative trading models and resultant systems when markets and models are combined. In addition, he has the written clarity and educational ability to explain the complexities in a way that an intelligent trader can understand and follow.

Throughout this book, as with his earlier work, Howard organises subject material logically and then explains concepts succinctly with language appropriate to a general (but intelligent) trading audience. His work has academic rigour but is designed for the non-academic, his description of probabilities and statistical analysis in the financial markets are second to none. Following conceptual descriptions, Howard then provides many worked examples and, where appropriate, computer code that demonstrates and amplifies the points he is making.

Dr Bandy works to create understanding of the complete trading model including: Issue selection, Entries, Exits, Risk assessment, Position sizing, Model development, Model-System Walk-forward back testing etc. He also looks at the “transformation” of common indicators to produce clearer and more reliable trading results. In one transformation example the Wilders RSI is mathematically reconstructed to produce the same results but to allow the parameter (days) to be a continuous decimal number rather than a whole number, this is particularly useful when using models with low parameter values. Finally, while his focus is on education and creating understanding, he does provided a range of suggested trading models and systems that can form the basis of systems that the reader can adopt for their own trading. Again, as an example, the book provides a fully documented approach showing how a model utilising the VIX can be used to trade other instruments that have strong correlation with the VIX. The demonstrated equity curve is impressive.

Dr Howard Bandy is new to Amazon but I (along with others) have been following his work closely since 2008. Howard’s work has revolutionised my trading. I have been an active trader, managing family funds for more than 20 years. I am a long term member, office bearer and former National President of the Australian Technical Analyst Association (ATAA) and also a director of IFTA. Over the years I have been a keen student in the field of Technical Analysis and have consumed many books on the subject. Some of my past favoured authors have included David Aronson, Ralph Vince, Larry Connors, Mark Jurik, Perry Kaufman, Benoit Mandelbrot, Nassim Taleb, John Bollinger, Thomas Stridesman and Katz & McCormick.

From my personal trading experience I strongly recommend “Mean Reversion Trading Systems”, along with Dr Bandy’s previous books, to any financial market trader interested in fully understanding and developing competent quantitative trading systems.

At last, a book that provides trading systems that actually work...

Bandy preaches an approach to the market which makes a lot of sense. Trade systems that trade frequently, have a short holding period and high win rate. The result of which is consistent returns with low drawdown and excellent compounding potential. In this book he outlines a number of systems of that nature, and provides the actual system code, along with the test results and metrics which prove his claims. Bandy has spent most of his life working on trading system design, and in a sense this is a distillation of what he believes works best, having tried no doubt hundreds of approaches.

Unlike most of the trading books out there which are big on claims, but short on evidence, this book is a practical guide to designing and building mean reversion trading systems that actually work. If you're just getting started in system design, or are looking for fresh ideas, this book will be a valuable addition to your library.

Seriously insightful, but for the technically-minded only.

This is an insightful book that has rally doubled my knowledge of quantitative trading in one reading. And it's the sort of book that one wants to read many times as new ideas and questions form. I like mr bandy's style a lot. His no-nonsense approach requires everything to be tested, which is right up my alley. No fluffy candlestick patterns or trend lines or anything that can't be rigorously tested.

One limitation of the book though is that it is heavily oriented around the AmiBroker trading/back testing software. Anyone who has done a fair amount of coding in other platforms should have no trouble translating, but it does make the book somewhat specialized. If you have an interest in swing trading systems that can be rigorously tested though, don't miss this book!

Good reference book

This is a good reference book, albeit a bit outdated. Gunsmithing doesn't change with time, but the type of guns do. In this sense, the book is a bit outdated, but the different projects are well explained, and it seems to me that this edition has more pictorial elements.

This is the sixth edition of a book on all normal and abnormal problems encountered in pregnancy.

Purpose

It is intended as a definitive reference for obstetrics, from physiology to pathology.

Audience

The audience includes anyone in the field of obstetrics, although residents and physicians may derive the most benefit. This has been an essential book in obstetrics and the newest edition is no exception. The authors are leaders in the field.

Features

The book is easily broken down into smaller areas – physiology, prenatal care, intrapartum care, complicated pregnancies, coexisting disease, and legal and ethical issues. This breakdown is very helpful, as readers can easily find a chapter with the desired information… The images are excellent, including ones carried over from the previous editions… An increased emphasis on evidence-based medicine is apparent. One excellent example is in the multiple gestation chapter, which deals head-on with controversial topics such as cerclage, progesterone, and cervical length screening and even recommends potential strategies. As many new residents will turn to this book as their primary learning source, it is important to teach the incorporation of study results into obstetrical practice. This is beautifully done here.

Assessment

This edition continues the book's wonderful tradition as a primary learning tool in obstetrics. It is exhaustive yet topical and provides trainees with excellent examples of incorporating evidence-based medicine. A wonderful resource.
