About the Author
John J. Burke is Library Director and Principal Librarian for the Gardner-Harvey Library on the Middletown regional campus of Miami University (Ohio). He holds an MS in library science from the University of Tennessee and a BA in history from Michigan State University. Prior to his current position, he gained a tremendous amount of experience with technology in libraries at the University of Cincinnati Raymond Walters College (Ohio) and Fairmont State College (West Virginia). He is a past president of the Academic Library Association of Ohio (ALAO) and a recipient of that organization's Jay Ladd Distinguished Service Award. He is the author of several other books, including four previous editions of The Neal-Schuman Library Technology Companion: A Basic Guide for Library Staff. He has presented on a variety of technology topics at conferences hosted by the Association of College and Research Libraries (ACRL) and the American Library Association (ALA), the Library Information and Technology Association (LITA) National Forum, and various regional and state conferences.

I'm glad I did

Just received GP for Dummies! When the Accounting Dept. says "go teach yourself", I purchased this book. So far, I'm glad I did. I'm mainly interested in SmartLists and customer classification. However, I do want a basic understanding of the system. The book is easy to understand and I appreciate the screenshots. The For Dummies instructional/references books are awesome.

Great Book for New GP Users

Someone was kind enough to loan me a copy of the new Microsoft Dynamics GP For Dummies (For Dummies (Computer/Tech)) book to review. I have to say that I found that the book provided surprisingly complete coverage of the core financial and distribution modules along with some interesting nuggets, such as coverage of the PSTL tools and brief coverage of Modifier. I found most of the advice to be right on including advice about not changing general journal information when posting through, void the sub-ledger transaction instead.

It won't replace a good consultant of course. No book does a good enough job on the why behind the setup decisions you'll need to make. But as a Microsoft MVP for Dynamics GP I'm always happy to see something that makes things easier for users.

My only quibble is that there was no coverage of the Journal Entry Correction functionality. It would have only taken an extra page or two in the book and seemed like a glaring omission given the coverage of other items in the book. But as I said, that's a quibble.

I have to recommend this book for new users. It's cheap enough and and it's a much easier read than the GP manuals. Why can't software companies write user manuals this way?

One of the best of its kind

If I could have just one recent book on my shelf to use as a reference for leadership development, organizational effectiveness, performance feedback and coaching, this would be the one. Each chapter is authoritatively written in clear, approachable language. Reflected in the chapters is a high level of professional and scientific discipline without a hint of academic arrogance. Unlike many edited books having different authors for each chapter, this book is well structured and integrated so as to be readable either from beginning-to-end (probably the best way) or each chapter standing alone. The chapter authors, each a recogonized expert, obviously paid attention to the others' writings. Each author provides a complementary piece of the puzzle while avoiding repetition. This handbook is an excellent example of how a compendium should be edited, and how a team of authors can blend their efforts on a complex subject.

I agree, I felt well prepared and informed on MSF after reading this handbook. The expert authors provided guidance for each step of the MSF process. This book is worth the time to read.

This book is smaller than I expected, but it is packed with all kinds of cool pictures and facts. I love that it focuses on exploration from Lewis and Clark to the Space Age. It has definitely sparked the imagination and lit the fire of exploration in my little explorer. I will also be incorporating it into our homeschooling journey.
