About the Author
Dr Cheng-Lung (Richard) Wu is a Senior Lecturer with the Department of Aviation at the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia. He obtained his PhD from Loughborough University, UK, in 2001. Since then Cheng-Lung has devoted much of his time to the subjects of airline operations, schedule planning/optimization, and delay/operations modeling, both through his research and also consulting for several major airlines. Cheng-Lung also publishes extensively in major air transport journals, such as the Journal of Air Transport Management and Transportation Planning and Technology, and is an editorial board member of the World Review of Intermodal Transportation Research and the International Journal of Aviation Management.

Brilliant despite stilted dialogue

This is one of the fastest paced books I have ever read. Ayn Rand's characters come to life as she paints very clear pictures of who they are and what they represent. She does this in spite of the fact that the dialogue is sometimes a bit wooden and stilted. In this novel, she sets forth her philosophy of "objectivism." She exposes those, such as a character named Peter Keating, an architect, who seemingly achieve greatness by copying others but somehow give the illusion of originality and creativity. In order to achieve "greatness," Keating was literally willing to sell anything, including his wife. Thus despite wealth and apparant achievement, his life was empty. Rand begins to formulate her values that altruism is an evil because a society which seeks to achieve this must do so at someone's expense and therefore leads to collectivism. In the person of Ellsworth Toohey, a flamboyant newspaper columnist, she shows how the power hungry manipulate the masses by setting a standard of mediocrity which fosters collectivism.
This book is full of passion, including a flaming, complex romantic affair between individualist architect Howard Roarke and socialite Dominique Francon. Their relationship develops from one in which they each seek to assert power over the other while achieving sexual release to one of true love between genuine soul mates. Roarke also has a passion for his work and is uncompromising in his creativity in accomplishing his professional goals. He will not ever compromise these goals despite enormous pressures to do so. Rand believed that there is only black and white in moral issues; there is no gray. Therefore, giving in a little is not compromise but rather, selling out your values and giving in to evil. Roarke was not a man to sell out, he had the courage of his convictions.
While setting forth her philosophy, Rand has also given us a novel which has a well developed plot. I found the novel to be gripping and I couldn't put it down. Following the career of Howard Roarke and the machinations of his enemies was fascinating. The plot had enough twists to provide surprises and to hold the reader's interest. This book is both an enjoyable novel as well as a challenging philosophical statement. I like Rand's philosophy and I love this book.

Fantastic portrayal of the insight of characters

I don't necessarily agree with the motives that move some of Rands' characters, particularly some of the heroes in her books. But her descriptions of thoughts, situations, and of the reasons behind the actions of her characters are a complete delight to read.
My not so positive comments are 1) that she describes sex just short of a cheap novel, and 2) that she completely ignores a crucial part of the human experience, which is bearing and raising children. If one is to present a compelling philosophy as to how the human experience should be, ones books should address the matter of raising worthy individuals.

Beautifully written and engaging

I've read only two of Ayn Rand's books, this and Atlas Shrugged, and by far, I prefer The Fountainhead. In both, Rand's characters represent certain ideals or stereotypes, but while these characters remain one-dimensional in AS, all of them basically one of two types, in The Fountainhead, her characters are complex, multi-dimensional and varied, and the various stories within the main storyline are all interesting and well-developed. Yes, she created characters and a story here to present her world/political views — and she absolutely pulled it off. Beautifully written and engaging.

Between 1918 and 1919, the Spanish Flu killed up to 100 million people. The flu first rose near Boston, and as it raged through the city, people were told to nurse their sick at home because the hospitals were overwhelmed. Toronto watched as the flu ravaged Boston, then Montreal. The virus was on its way.

However, thirteen-year-old Meredith is preoccupied with her own problems. Though she dreams of becoming a teacher, the girl is working as a servant for Doctor Waterton and his motherless family. She assists the cook and butler, and minds Harry, the youngest son, who is as mischievous a lad as any who ever stole from the sugar bowl. Imperious Maggie is a few years older than Meredith, and is a demanding mistress. Fortunately, the new maid finds a friend in Maggie's fifteen-year-old brother, Jack.

Then the flu strikes Toronto. Dr. Waterton goes to the hospital to tend the first patients, but never comes home. He sends word that he cannot be spared - not even when young Harry takes ill. Then the cook collapses, followed by the butler. The Waterton house is virtually cut off from the world. Meredith turns inexperienced hands to nursing and seeks Jack and Maggie's help in saving the sick.

Pat Bourke's debut YA historical novel, "Yesterday's Dead," plunges us into the desperate straits of families caught up in the epidemic. Ms. Bourke also explores the everyday struggles of working girls like Meredith. The epidemic tests Meredith's resolve, and also her ability to forge bonds with her reluctant helpers. Younger teenage girls should particularly enjoy Meredith's story and her ultimate triumph over adversity that most of us can only imagine.

Great historical discussion

Thirteen-year old Meredith was used to working hard in her own family but wasn't ready to take on the household of Dr. Waterton where she had to put up with cranky help and unkind children. The only pleasant person was the cook, Mrs. Butters. I absolutely loved Mrs. Butters...she would be the perfect person to have around if you were missing your mother as Meredith was. Meredith had been yanked out of her household and had to work since her father had died in the war, and her mother needed extra income.

Dr. Waterton was a kind person even with all the stress he was under with his children to raise since wife had died and the Spanish Flu to contend with.

Since Meredith had to make a good impression on the Watertons, she did her utmost to make everything work out as best as she could, especially when everyone began to fall ill from the Spanish flu. Meredith is the main character, and you will love her, her strength, her level-headedness, and her sweetness.

Even though I normally do not read YA books, I thoroughly enjoyed it. I always enjoy books set in the early 1900's and am always amazed how people cooked in stoves that were powered by coal. I also enjoy the setup of the households of the wealthy in terms of how many servants they had and how they were treated and how the servants treated each other.

This is a book for those who love historical fiction and have a love of the life Americans, Canadians, and Europeans lived before all our conveniences and medicines. It actually is frightening in terms of illnesses with no antibiotics to cure anyone. Wonder if antibiotics would have had any effect in this strain of the flu?

Enjoy the book....I certainly did and benefited from the history lesson. I definitely enjoyed the interaction among the characters. This would make a great discussion in a classroom in terms of how today's youth would feel about the way the characters reacted to each other and how illnesses are treated differently today. In fact, there would be many topics for interesting group discussions. 5/5

Historical fiction on par with American Girl or Dear America

"...I finished this book in one night, and again, I definitely liked it. The only other book I really remember reading that mentions the Spanish Influenza was Twilight, when Edward explains to Bella about the end of his human life. Bourke gives us a lot more to go on, as far as better understanding the extent of what this illness meant for the people in the midst of the outbreak. I've had the flu before, but this sounds a bit more awful, I think. I think I would have really enjoyed this book if I'd read it when I was younger, as well; I've always liked historical fiction, and with Meredith's story, Bourke covers a topic that isn't touched on as much for the main plot in a novel, so that's always welcome, I think."
