About the Author
Michael L. Wehmeyer, Ph.D. is Professor of Special Education; Director, Kansas University Center on Developmental Disabilities; and Associate Director, Beach Center on Disability, all at the University of Kansas. Dr. Wehmeyer is engaged in teacher personnel preparation in the area of severe, multiple disabilities and directs multiple federally funded projects conducting research and model development in the education of students with intellectual and developmental disabilities. He is the author of more than 180 articles or book chapters and has authored, co-authored or co-edited 19 books on disability and education-related issues, including issues pertaining to self-determination, transition, universal design for learning and access to the general curriculum for students with significant disabilities, and technology use by people with cognitive disabilities. He is a Fellow of the American Association on Mental Retardation, a past president of the Council for Exceptional Children s Division on Career Development and Transition, and is Editor-in-Chief for the journal "Remedial and Special Education". In 1999 Dr. Wehmeyer was the inaugural recipient of the Distinguished Early Career Research Award from the Council for Exceptional Children s Division for Research. In May, 2003 he was awarded the American Association on Mental Retardation s National Education award. Dr. Wehmeyer holds undergraduate and Masters degrees in special education from the University of Tulsa and a Masters degree in experimental psychology from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, where he was a Rotary International Teacher of the Handicapped Fellow. He earned his Ph.D. in Human Development and Communication Sciences from the University of Texas at Dallas.

Karrie A. Shogren, Ph.D. is an Associate Professor of Special Education at the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign. She received her doctorate in special education from the University of Kansas. Dr. Shogren has conducted extensive research in the areas of self-determination and systems of supports for people with intellectual disabilities. She has a specific interest in the multiple, nested factors that impact student outcomes and the use of diverse methodologies to understand and explore these factors. She has published over 45 peer reviewed articles, is the author or co-author of 5 books, and is one of the co-authors of Intellectual Disability: Definition, Classification, and Systems of Support, the 11th Edition of the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities' seminal definition of intellectual disability (formerly mental retardation). Dr. Shogren has received funding from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES) to support her research.

Not a good choice if you need text-to-speech.

Hypocritical - Special Ed Book and accessible features are disabled from the publisher?! I use Kindle for as many text and books as possible. I need to use the text-to-speech feature to learn and study best. It is not activated for this book, nor is Xray. The material is quality and up to date, but the loose leaf format is annoying in the digital version. Additionally, not having active links for the supplemental activities is misleading. For the price, this should be an example of accommodated/ Universal Design options for reading a studying with all of the appropriate exercises included for a variety of learning/studying styles. This is a poor demonstration of how to accommodate student.

Unhappy with book

I don't normally give reviews however, after buying the book for such a high price I feel that I need to share. I spent about $102. For the book only for it to be a loose leaf print. Sender could of thrown in a binder for the price. I needed the book for class and it arrived late. Had to play catch up on the reading before posting. To top it off the print is in grey. I already wear glasses so grey made it even harder for me to see and read. Had to purchase the kindle verse. Not very wise giving the book is about exceptional lives.

Although this book does provide much helpful information, I was particularly struck by the inadequacy of the gifted student chapter. It perpetuates the misunderstanding that gifted students' exceptional needs lie primarily within the scope of academic issues. Most educators and administrators do not understand the social and emotional needs of gifted students. To better serve gifted students teachers and administrators should be familiar with theories such as Dabrowski's Theory of Positive Disintegration, as it is applied to the study of gifted students. The concept of "overexcitabilities" is relevant and constructive, and when educators are ignorant of how giftedness may manifest itself in students, behaviorally, emotionally, and socially, they may actually cause harm to such children.

Honest Review

I was really taken with the first book in this series that really was a journey down the rabbit hole that messed with your head and which you really do need to read to understand this second book. I have been really looking forward to this next installment to see how the characters all fared. While the story wasn’t as mind blowing as book one now that I understand the procedure that takes Jane "in", Tara still delivers a complex and gut-wrenching story.
We are once again sucked into the complexity of Jane’s mind from the off as we find her in the middle of one of her ‘mind visits’ and once again she is sucked into a maze of indicators to try and piece together the puzzle. And what a dark twisted puzzle this is, Jane is trying to piece together what happened to Ashley a young girl found on the brink of death on a frozen river shore. Her story is disturbing even to read and leaves Jane reeling from its impact.
Jane can’t let Ashley’s story go and is determined to find the person responsible for the things she learned during the mind visit but life suddenly becomes as complicated in reality for her. Her relationship with Dash takes an unexpected turn and suddenly her partner also appears to not be who she thought. The case keeps taking deeper and deeper twists and becomes bigger than Jane ever imagined. Can Jane work through the clues to find justice for Ashley?
This is a great series that has a superb main female lead in Jane who is an elite army officer. It is complex and really sucks you into each story and I am once again looking forward to the next book in this series.

Ah-freaking-mazing!

I was so excited to dive back in to this crazy mind bending world with Jane! What crazy crap are we going to experience with her this time! I didn’t think it could get more horrifying then Blood and Bone. I laugh now, this is Tara freaking Brown we are talking about here! This woman’s mind is crazy scary LOL Right off the back you start the book in confusion until you realize Jane is in a mind jump. TB still manages to keep us confused, guessing and on our toes even though we now know this crazy game of mind jumping Jane plays. And as terrible as things are, because let’s face it, Jane is only involved in the worst of the worst cases, you still find moments of pure happiness and hysterical banter mixed throughout. We get to see a new side of Jane here too, a little bit of a softer side. We get to delve into her brain a little and see why she does what she does in the mind jumps and how smart her little brain is at putting the puzzle pieces together. The depth of the story that unfolds here is very intense! I can’t wait to read it again so I can that much more of the little clues hidden throughout. My husband is even sucked in and obsessed with this story and is upset he has to wait so long for the next book! :D

My first thought was, "Is this one better than book 1, or just as good?"

I'm still deciding on that one.

But seriously, after everything made sense at the end of book 1, book 2 is easier to follow. Oh, don't get me wrong, it's still mind-blowing and mind-boggling, and it still has you guessing and second-guessing everything.

So, Jane is Jane whenever she's not analyzing patients, victims that are in a coma. When she's not hunting down psychos, she's a woman that has a hot doctor for a fiance, one that loves her and would die for her. I have to tell you, Dash/Derek has stolen my heart, that perfect British bastard.

But nothing is as it seems. Both in Jane's professional and personal life. Who's the psycho that did gruesome and horrible things to eleven girls, how did it all start and is it someone Jane knows? Plus, what secrets does Dash/Derek keep from Jane? Who is he, really?

I am so going to reread both of these books, before the third and last one is out! Loved it. Brilliant x2. 5 stars.

All these topics have undergone extraordinarily rapid development in recent years and this treatment offers a modern perspective emphasizing the most recent contributions. The presentation of foundational results is detailed and includes many accessible proofs not readily available outside original sources. While the orientation is conceptual and theoretical, the main points are regularly reinforced by computational comparisons.

Intended primarily as a graduate level textbook for statistics, computer science, and electrical engineering students, this book assumes only a strong foundation in undergraduate statistics and mathematics, and facility with using R packages. The text has a wide variety of problems, many of an exploratory nature. There are numerous computed examples, complete with code, so that further computations can be carried out readily. The book also serves as a handbook for researchers who want a conceptual overview of the central topics in data mining and machine learning.

Bertrand Clarke is a Professor of Statistics in the Department of Medicine, Department of Epidemiology and Public Health, and the Center for Computational Sciences at the University of Miami. He has been on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Statistical Association, the Journal of Statistical Planning and Inference, and Statistical Papers. He is co-winner, with Andrew Barron, of the 1990 Browder J. Thompson Prize from the Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers.

Ernest Fokoue is an Assistant Professor of Statistics at Kettering University. He has also taught at Ohio State University and been a long term visitor at the Statistical and Mathematical Sciences Institute where he was a Post-doctoral Research Fellow in the Data Mining and Machine Learning Program. In 2000, he was the winner of the Young Researcher Award from the International Association for Statistical Computing.

Hao Helen Zhang is an Associate Professor of Statistics in the Department of Statistics at North Carolina State University. For 2003-2004, she was a Research Fellow at SAMSI and in 2007, she won a Faculty Early Career Development Award from the National Science Foundation. She is on the Editorial Board of the Journal of the American Statistical Association and Biometrics.

An overall good book, although a hard one.

This book covers many methods in data mining and machine learning. The best thing to me is that it tells each story from a theoretical way, but not a superficial way. It really helps you understand these machine learning methods from a deep perspective. Reading this book did let me think more thoroughly.
Of course the good thing can be a bad thing in that, if you do not have enough background in statistics and math, this book can be very difficult to read. The famous Hastie, Tibshirani and Friedman's book is a good one and someone may complain that that book is not easy to read unless you have solid background in math. However Clarke's book, to me, is even harder.
If you really want to learn the details in data mining, this book would be an ideal resource.

Shelley Gaskin, Series Editor for the GO! Series, is a professor of business and computer technology at Pasadena City College in Pasadena, California. She holds a master's degree in business education from Northern Illinois �University and a doctorate in adult and community education from Ball State University. Dr. Gaskin has 15 years of experience in the computer industry with several Fortune 500 companies and has developed and written training materials for custom systems applications in both the public and private sector. She is also the author of books on Microsoft Outlook and word processing.

Nancy Graviett is a professor in the Business and Computer Science department at St. Charles Community College in Cottleville, Missouri, where she is the program coordinator for the Business Administrative Systems program and teaches within the program. Nancy is also very active with distance learning and teaches in face-to-face, hybrid, and online formats. She holds a master’s degree from University of Missouri. Nancy holds Microsoft� Certified Application Specialist certification in multiple applications and provides training both on and off campus. In her free time, Nancy enjoys quilting and spending time with family and friends.

Thanks for taking the time to view this page. In some ways, this book is a glimpse into my life's story. It celebrates my continuing journey and ongoing development as a public speaker, but it is more a story about my process than it is about my arrival. There are literally thousands of books on public speaking, so why is this one worthy of your time? Like most people, public speaking did not come easy for me. Once upon a time, the very thought of talking in public would make me apprehensive and a bit sweaty. Nevertheless, public speaking is kind of like death and taxes; there is no way around it. Books are plentiful that focus on preparing presentations and delivering them with skill and style. This book, which is directed to active and aspiring speakers, teaches one how to build a purpose-centered presentation from start to finish. My goal here is to offer the reader a proven systematic approach designed to help new and experienced speakers develop and deliver purposeful talks that produce
a desired outcome. This purpose-centered approach gives speakers an upfront goal that helps them align all components of the talk so that they achieve a predetermined result.
In a busy world, sometimes we need a thumbnail sketch of a subject, one that shows us a view of the big picture albeit in a small and condensed way. Thus this book is designed to be more of an overview than a treatise on public speaking. I found Dr. Rodriguez's book, Purpose Driven Public Speaking, a superb `how to' guide to public speaking. The book had interesting real life examples and very practical tips. It held my interest. It's not your typical business book. It takes the mystery out of how to prepare and deliver a compelling speech with a purpose. It is applicable to casual speeches like at family gathering or more formal speeches at work. I highly recomend it!

Purpose-Centered Public Speaking - WHY WAS THIS BOOK WRITTEN?

The author begins by explaining that the book is a glimpse into his life's story, celebrating his "continuing journey and ongoing development as a public speaker." The aim of the book appears to be two-fold:

1. To empower readers to improve their ability to speak in public.
2. To show a "simple, purposeful and systematic approach to public speaking."

Even though he has been involved in public speaking for nearly four decades, the author says his growth as a speaker is continually developing. To hear that even an experienced speaker is an eternal student of public speaking makes you realise just what an art this is.

Great tool for those in the arena of public speaking

Dr. Rodriguez's book is refreshing and very insightful. As somebody that is in front of an audience on a weekly basis (I am a minister), I find that this book is a great tool and it will help me refine my speaking abilities. I really liked chapter 5 in particular. This chapter impressed me so much that I am seriously considering switching techniques. I have used a certain technique for the past 8 years but after reading this chapter I was moved to consider something that makes more sense. The book is challenging (in a good way) since it foments you moving from what you are used to doing to doing what improves your ROI. I have suggested this book to a bunch of my friends with the same profession I have and I will continue to do so.
