Some surprise best-sellers are more surprising than others. Such was psychotherapist Kramer's last book, Listening to Prozac (1993). Although nontechnical, it wasn't exactly easy reading, and neither is its successor, which Kramer says was all generated from its very first sentence, "All you want is a simple piece of advice." That want is, for Kramer, essential to the psychiatric encounter, and its motive is contained in the second sentence, "There is a decision you must make--stay or leave." Thereafter, Kramer presents a series of couples, at least one of whose members is contemplating that decision. He uses his hypothetical treatments of the contemplators to explore how and on what bases therapists respond to requests for advice. The issues involved in such requests are of personal autonomy and interpersonal intimacy, and Kramer shows how some of the most influential therapeutic practitioners have addressed them and how their insights and techniques are employed by an everyday shrink, himself. Full of plenty of other insights garnered from literature and the social sciences, including even the work of primate ethologist Frans de Waal, Kramer's book about how psychotherapy works has much substance. It is easy to learn a lot from it, despite Kramer's discursive (really, rather gassy) style. Ray Olson

Most Thought Provoking Book on Leaving a Relationship

This book provides a lot of information on relationships. How they start, how they work, and forces that tend to tear them apart. In fact, I would rate it as the one of the best books on relationships that I have ever read.
The author provides a survey of many different theories about relationships. This can help the reader form new perspectives about how to view their own situation.
This book really makes you work. If you want to learn and dig deeper, expecially about yourself, this is a great book. If you want simple fast advice, in the "Men are from Mars, Women are from Venus" style, this is not for you.
It seems that the reviewers who did not like this book, must prefer a book that "fixes" their relationship with relatively simple and straight forward advice. I understand the desire to have things that easy, but my experience suggests otherwise.
Kramer's discussion is very intelligent and engaging. Sometimes the style was a bit frustrating, but it was different and probably made the book much more interesting.
A must read for anyone who wants to gain a very broad perspective on relationships in a reasonably short amount of time.

Deep, intelligent, funny, useful, challenging, unusual, ...

With Beck's Love is Never Enough, it is by far the best book I have read on couples. With so many self-help books centered on finding fault in the other, this one brings a rarer and more usefully challenging perspective. I found it worth reading every year.
Some of the most striking points made by Kramer in this book:
- a promising relationship is one in which, when you change enough, a reciprocal response occurs.
- you need to grow in willingness to be slightly taken advantage of
- you want change ? then stay this time !
- if you want change, change yourself first
- to be committed is to be able to find the bills a mess (or anything else that drives you crazy) and be perfectly fine.
- if you chose somebody with about the same level of differenciation/maturity as you, then you are at the right place
- if you are with somebody easy enough to love and not frankly abusive, you should stay
- learn not to tolerate, but to actually love what you now disdain in your partner (stop being vicious about the unclosed soda cap bottle and learn to find it charming)
- you say your couple or partner do not feel right. Don't you have a problem with your work instead ?
- hidden depression in one or the other partner is the cause of half of the couple problems and breakups. A partner suddently finding all sorts of flaws in the other is a strong hint of depression.
- insist ! Not on leaving, but on staying and having it your way.
- beware of negative projective identification: you unconsciously force the other to behave in ways you fear.
- maturity consists in a large part in resisting to (and resisting the use of) projective identification
- use the current relationship as a greenhouse to develop your relationship skills.
- ethics do matter.
- men are from Illinois and women are from Indiana. They are different, but not in especially confusing ways.
- relationships are exactly like skiing: it does not work as long as you are in the back seat.

Worth your time...

"Should You Leave" is Peter Kramer's contribution to the "Self-Help

and Relationships" genre. There is cleverness working on several

levels as he goes from one anecdotal narrative to the next as so many

other books written by psychologists have done. But Kramer's goal is

not to give advice, it's to make the reader stop and think about what

advice is in the first place. He also builds on the themes he first

developed in "Listening To Prozac" and goes into the problem of how

undiagnosed depression can poison relationships and bring people to

the edge of divorce. The only real criticism you can level at this

book is that it was written because of the success of "Listening To

Prozac" and doesn't really have a strong reason to exist, other than

to provide Kramer with the opportunity to meander though several

themes for no other reason then that they are of interest to him as a

therapist. In the end he pulls off the rather clever trick of writing

a "Psychological Advice Book" that's a treatise on the nature of

psychology and of advice, but no real advice is provided, just a lot of

shrewd observations and food for thought. Do you think that's just a

little too clever? If so then you can skip this book, but if you're

still interested, good for you because you're in for a treat. This

book has better and more insightful psychological writing then you're

likely to find in any other dozen books on the subject. I have no

trouble recommending it.

About the Author

David W. Snoke (Ph.D., University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, 1990) is a professor in the Department of Physics and Astronomy of the University of Pittsburgh. Prior to coming to Pittsburgh in 1994 he was a postdoc at the Max Planck Institute in Stuttgart with Manuel Cardona, and also worked in industry. In 2006 Professor Snoke was elected a Fellow of the American Physical Society, "for his pioneering work on the experimental and theoretical understanding of dynamical optical processes in semiconductor systems.'' His present research focuses on Bose-Einstein condensation of excitons and polaritons in two and three dimensions. Professor Snoke’s diverse experience has given him strong feelings about the present needs in solid state physics education. In particular, his experience in the fundamental semiconductor optics community as given him a deep appreciation for the unifying theoretical methods which run through solid state physics, while his interaction with the Bose-Einstein condensation community has given him an appreciation for the underlying unity of coherent phenomena as diverse as superconductors, superfluids, and lasers.

What's really going on in solids

This is definitely the best book I've read on solid-state physics. It presents clearly the beautiful underlying concepts, while relating them to other fields of physics and giving the necessary mathematical tools. This can be a great launching pad for a researcher and a useful resource for an educator.

When learning a new subject in physics or engineering, I often find myself thinking: "Sure, I see the equations. The math comes out neatly, and I can probably calculate everything I need using these .... But what is really going on here?" Snoke's book gives the understanding of what's "really going on" supported by a sound mathematical basis.

I believe that this is the right way to learn and teach physics, and as an educational tool, I never saw anything like this book since Feynman's lectures on physics. I teach an undergraduate course in solid-state physics, and I already started implementing some of the concepts presented here in class with great success.

The new holistic philosophy of the book allows dealing with very interesting new physics painlessly with an elegant mathematical description. I really like the demonstrations of deep fundamental concepts in "real-life" aspects of solid-state physics, such as explanations of why solids don't collapse or why spins align in a magnet based on fermionic behavior and quantum-field interactions. The author often puts the finger on what's the root cause of things. A good example is the sign in transition probability into a populated state which determines most of chemistry for fermions on the one hand, and all the stimulated processes for bosons including lasers and condensates on the other hand, and the reason for why only bosons can make up classical waves.

This book probably does not have the detail given in other basic solid-state books such as Ashcroft & Mermin, however I think the details should come only after the understanding of the principles. Furthermore, Snoke's book allows easy understanding of more advanced topics such as group theory that is usually difficult to grasp in more detailed books such as the one by Yu and Cardona. Another advanced topic clearly presented here is the quantum-field approach for many-body effects that can be found in more detail e.g. in Kittel's "Quantum theory of solids", however that book can be very difficult for a beginner in the field.

There are many useful connections to other subjects including quantum optics, nonlinear optics, chemistry, Bose-Einstein condensates etc. I really like this approach in contrast to the continuously growing over-specialization of science nowadays, leading to a sort of degeneracy in niche fields that could benefit from new ideas.

I strongly recommend this book to graduate students and to anyone interested in understanding solid-state physics, as well as to those teaching it.

one of the best solid state textbooks to date

This is one of the best solid state physics textbooks to date. We are all accustomed to learning the topic from Kittel or Ashcroft and Mermin. However, when the time comes to apply the knowledge to modern research, these books clearly belong to a different era and badly need to be updated. The book should be commended for its choice of topics (fairly modern), and its presentation style, which is highly pedagogical. The author writes in an extremely clear style, where each sentence is important. The book builds up the topics to cover modern, advanced materials, but assumes very few pre-requisites. Everything in the book is derived from first principles, using simple language and concepts. You will also be thankful for its use of group theory. Modern research requires it - but the existing texts are too advanced for the average reader. Snoke cover it at the right level for a physics student - without the proofs which tend to get in the way of learning this technical topic. In terms of content, the book covers topics that are relevant in modern research, such as excitons, spin-orbit coupling, quantum confinement, nano-junctions, quasi-particles, magneto-transport, fractional quantum Hall effect, anisotropic media, electro optics, second quantization, coherent states, photon interactions with matter, phonon interactions, electron-phonon interactions, Master equations, relaxation phenomena (T1, T2), defects, electron-electron interactions, phonon-phonon interactions, Boltzmann electron transport, nonlinear optics, photon-photon interactions, Raman scattering, polarons, many-body effects, Feynman diagrams & diagrammatic perturbation theory, Green's functions, correlation functions, noise, linear response theory & Kubo formula, correlated electron effects, spin and magnetism, superconductivity, etc. and the book uses both conventional notations and second quantized / Nambu notation. So you will be in good shape to read the current literature after going through this book. The problems / exercises are also pretty useful for self-teaching the topic to oneself.

The pedagogical value of Snoke’s book for undergraduate STEM students cannot be underestimated. The students in my Physical Chemistry and Modern Physics courses find the book very readable; this enables them to begin their “special topics” research at their own pace after a brief introduction. Many textbooks are lacking continuity in the development of topics; however, Snoke’s book is well written and logical. His book provides classical intuitive developments, followed by the essential quantum description. His field theory development builds from a consistent and readable description of the quantized harmonic oscillator and development of the polarizations and other needed attributes of full-blown field theory. His is one of the best introductions I have read and consequently, the STEM students understand it and feel encouraged. This understanding enables them to apply the theory, derive and understand a useful result and gain a sense of accomplishment. One student commented “that they felt as though they were walking in the footsteps of the giants.”
Most of the chemistry students are surprised by their “discovery of bosons.” They understand what a “real” coherent state is and can write its wave function. They further can follow the development of the statistical mechanical Bose-Einstein Condensate (BEC) theory. Their understanding continues to special properties of BEC: superconductivity, lasers, polaritons, etc. STEM students are elated with their elevation to a higher plateau of comprehension.

Smart Antennas for Wireless CommunicationsIS-95 and Third Generation CDMA ApplicationsPrefaceThis text has been created to satisfy the growing demand for knowledge in two emerging areas: adaptive antennas (also known as smart antennas) and Code Division Multiple Access. CDMA was commercialized in the early 1990s by Qualcomm, Inc., a San Diego, California, company that pioneered the use of a classic military concept for the burgeoning cellular telephone industry. Adaptive arrays, first conceptualized in the 1960s with the birth of digital signal processing, only recently have become practical for deployment; the intense growth rates of wireless services around the world are beckoning for their commercial use.This text has been developed through years of research by the authors and their colleagues at the Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group of Virginia Tech and at Bell Communications Research. Our goal in creating this text is to provide fundamental and practical information for practicing engineers, students, and researchers in industry as well as in academia. To complement the book, the second author was asked by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) to provide a compendium of selected readings of key journal papers dedicated to the topic of smart antennas. The compendium, when used in conjunction with this text, provides a convenient single source of literature for use in classrooms or industry short courses.The material and organization of this book stemmed from the first author's 1995 Ph.D. dissertation on the subject of CDMA and smart antennas. Since then, a great deal of work has transpired in the field, including the adoption of the IS-95 J-STD-008 CDMA standard, the new 14,400 bps voice coder for Rate Set 2 channels, new methods and models for implementation and modeling of smart antennas in CDMA, and the stringent wireless E-911 position location requirement 125m, 67% of the time imposed by the Federal Communications Commission. We have worked diligently to include up-to-the-minute information in this text. The text is arranged into 10 chapters. Chapter 1 provides an overview of CDMA and smart antennas; it includes a glossary of terms and a fundamental treatment of synchronous and asynchronous CDMA. Antenna and propagation fundamentals, as they relate to CDMA systems, are also presented. Chapter 2 provides valuable practical information on the IS-95 J-STD-008 standard, and it provides in-depth descriptions of all of the CDMA channels. Also included is an actual link budget design for a PCS CDMA system. Chapter 3 provides fundamental material on adaptive antenna arrays and array theory. The concepts of beamforming, weighting vectors, and fixed-beam vs. adaptive beam antennas are covered. Chapter 4 applies this material to specific CDMA implementations that may be used for today's IS-95 and future CDMA systems. Chapter 5 combines the concepts of CDMA and adaptive antennas to derive analytical expressions that allow wireless system designers to predict the coverage and capacity gains that adaptive antennas provide in a multi-cell CDMA system. This chapter derives classic results that have led to system capacity predictions using CDMA with and without adaptive antennas.Chapter 6 provides an overview of multipath and Direction-Of-Arrival models for wireless channels. A host of propagation models which are useful for analysis and simulation of adaptive array algorithms are presented. Chapter 7 then describes complete details of one multipath propagation model, the Geometrically Based Single Bounce Elliptical Model, which provides complete characterization of a multipath environment in microcell/picocell applications. Chapter 8 describes optimal spatial filtering approaches that use both adaptive arrays and characteristics of the CDMA signals. Building on the fundamentals provided in Chapter 3, this chapter presents optimal methods that null interference while maximizing the carrier-to-noise ratio of a desired user. Chapter 9 describes the algorithmic techniques for determining the Direction-Of-Arrival (DOA) of a signal in a multi-user interference environment. Such capabilities will be required for position location techniques. Chapter 10 concludes this text with a thorough treatment of position location algorithms and approaches. Appendix A covers the derivation of the Gaussian Approximation and its many derivatives for spread spectrum systems. Other appendices provide information that engineers and educators may find useful.The authors wish to acknowledge the invaluable assistance, skill, and patience of Aurelia Scharnhorst, a research associate with Virginia Tech's Mobile and Portable Radio Research Group (MPRG), in formatting this text. JOSEPH C. LIBERTI, JR. holds a Ph.D. in electrical engineering from Virginia Tech. He is currently a Research Scientist with Bellcore in Red Bank, New Jersey, where he is working on smart antenna technology and radio channel characterization for a variety of applications including CDMA, PACS, and other forward looking wireless systems.

THEODORE S. RAPPAPORT is the James S. Tucker Professor of Engineering at Virginia Tech, founder of the university's Mobile & Portable Radio Research Group, and Chairman of Wireless Valley Communications. He holds three patents and has authored, co-authored or co-edited 12 books, including Wireless Communications: Principles and Practice (Prentice Hall PTR).

A must for 3G researchers and Engineers

This books finds very handy for researchers especially in High-speed wireless networks and Nomadic computing. Tomorrow 3G networks and its evolutions will rule the major chunk of Mobile internet and Mobile commerce. This book provides a very exhaustive research issues and engineering solutions for Smart antennas for next generation wireless networks.

Not a bulky book and yet impressive

Needless to say: this book will certainly be one of the fundamentals used in both, undergraduated and graduated curricula, as it covers the roots of adaptive and smart antennas technologies, among other topics. The way it explains the essentials leads to experts and non-experts to get into this field very quickly if also attending onto the cited references. I highly recommend it and the price is worth of it.

I used this book as a source when I did a project in my Wireless & Mobile Comm. course. My topic was Smart Antennas for wireless applications. The book was very helpful. It is well written, organized and easy to read. It provides a lot of research issues and engineering solutions for Smart antennas for next generation wireless systems. I recommend this book for all researchers and engineers working in this field.
