Good But Not Without Problems

I previously reviewed grades 4 and 5 in this Simple Steps series and, as I mentioned in those reviews, my work as a volunteer is with adult GED-prep students. I will only be reviewing the Math section of this book.
I like the general format of instruction pages split vertically with instructions on the left and examples on the right. Color-coding key terms with their corresponding examples is a great idea. The lack of “childish” pictures throughout the book helps keep students focused on the ideas and is a bonus for my adult students.
Multi-Digit Multiplication: Factoring the multiplier to do two multiplication problems followed by adding the two products is horribly clumsy, especially since they presented practice problems with three digit multipliers. Better to teach offsetting each sub-product and then add just as they do in the sample problem on page 45.
Reciprocal Operations: They demonstrated multiplication/division (providing only four practice problems) but not addition/subtraction. Also, they only used division problems whose quotients are whole numbers.
Dividing Decimals (page 13): Rather than “change the divisor to a whole number by multiplying by a power of ten” I would have preferred illustrating moving the divisor’s decimal point to the right and move the dividend’s decimal the same number of positions (zero filling as needed) and then bring the decimal point up to the quotient.
Multiplying Fractions: In the sample problem on page 18, they reduced 6/24 to 1/6. Yikes! In the example on page 19, they should have explained that simplifying improper fractions involves dividing the numerator by the denominator.
Multiplying Mixed Numbers: Saying “rewrite each mixed number as an improper fraction” without giving the steps: [1. multiply the denominator by the whole number; 2. add the numerator to the product; 3. write a new improper fraction with the new product as the numerator over the original denominator] is nuts!
One page (40) is devoted to converting measurements. In the books for grades 4 and 5, this topic was covered by explaining both standard and metric measurements. My complaint about grade 5 was that they didn’t demonstrate conversions between standard and metric systems. In this book they are only dealing with standard linear measurements.
They did a good job of explaining ratios, rates, percents, and proportions including the use of tables, graphs, and providing word problems over nine pages.
Egads: in the instructions on page 45, they incorrectly used the word “percentage” instead of “percent.” Arrgh: on page 46, they left out the � from the sample problem (sixth line down).
They introduce the signs > and < without defining them! (page 59).
Nice work on Properties (Commutative, Associative, Identity, Distributive). Would have like a brief explanation for why I can’t divide by zero…but plenty exist on the web.
I would have put Scientific Notation right after Exponents.
It would have been nice if they had shown the mnemonic PEMDAS with Order of Operations.
They do a nice job of introducing algebraic expressions step-by-step. I would have liked more than three word problems (page 75) and was surprised that the Review on page 76 had none.
Geometry (starting on page 90): I think they should have started with calculating perimeter before area of each type of shape. Also, a quick refresher on the types of triangles would have been welcome. Trapezoids: I like that they explained the rationale for the formula A=�(b1+b2)h by showing how two trapezoids can form a rectangle. The book for grade 5 introduced circles; this one doesn’t mention them. I would have thought that the formulae for circumference and area of circles would have been appropriate. Utilizing the net patterns to introduce surface area is great, but they should have then introduced the surface area formulas for prisms and pyramids.
Caught another random error: on page 108, Point D is at (-5, 2).
Nice descriptions and examples of mean, mode, and median and when each is appropriate. Also, good treatment of range and measures of variability. Finally, the book illustrates three ways to display data: box plots, histograms, and dot plots.
The book has obvious errors in regard to the math portion that I found irritating yet workable. The rest of the book was more managable and easier to work with. I was a Language Arts teacher and found this fairly comprehensive though there were some errors present as well but again nothing too difficult or hard to spot. Overall, I am ranking this as a 4* book because it covers a lot.

Simple Skill Building, Review & Reinforcement for Sixth Graders (and their parents!)

I'm a substitute teacher and am always looking for ways to stay up to date on the material I will be tasked with teaching, and for exercises to use in the classroom. "Simple Steps" is a well laid out, easy to follow book with simple explanations and a helpful answer key. It offers a brief description with examples and then a few practice questions, followed by a review at the end of each section and a chapter review at the end of each sub-topic. It doesn't go into incredible depth on any one subject in math or language arts, the two main sections in the book, but it covers a broad range of topics within each category with an average of three pages per topic, e.g. percents, ratios, and sentence fragments. At 275 pages, plus 42 pages of answers, it isn't intimidating. The pages are perforated so they can be easily removed from the book.
My biggest complaint is that the font in the answer key incredibly tiny! The answers are given in red type so you can easily see it, but I would appreciate it more if it were a little larger.
This book would be an excellent tool for students to use as a review over the summer, for additional practice/reinforcement throughout the school year, and a great resource for parents who get asked the dreaded "may you help me with this?"

Great Primer for our Daughter

My older daughter loves math. Throw anything towards her with math in it and she will just devour it! When this book came up on VINE I jumped at the chance to get this for her. Although she is a fifth grader she is enjoying the slightly more advanced math (we don't want to get her too far ahead which would create boredom in her math class).
The Simple Steps uses skill building from a starting point then building upon this with great lessons and examples. The book is thoughtfully laid out and easy to follow along. There is an answer key in the book as well.
Mathematics covered in this book includes multiplication and division (more complex numbers such as 1348 x 829), percentages, number systems, statistics and geometry.
Aside from math there is also Language Arts which covers capitalization, punctuation, sentences, and parts of speech to name a few.
All in all this is a great primer and certainly is taking some of the pressure off of next years' math and language arts.
